Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture plays a critical role in the socio-economic development of many Nigerian communities, particularly in rural areas. Small-scale farming, as a primary economic activity in Jalingo Local Government, Taraba State, serves as the foundation for food security, employment, and rural development. While traditional methods of farming have been the mainstay for many smallholders, there has been a growing push for modernizing farming techniques to increase productivity, sustainability, and profitability. Newspaper advertisements have emerged as a powerful tool in the agricultural sector, used to promote modern farming techniques, agricultural products, and services aimed at improving the livelihoods of small-scale farmers. These advertisements, which may feature new agricultural technologies, government programs, financial services, and farming equipment, play a vital role in disseminating information to rural populations. In Jalingo, local newspapers have become a key channel for promoting small-scale farming, reaching a wide audience, and encouraging farmers to adopt innovative practices that could enhance their productivity (Adamu & Bako, 2024). Through the strategic use of advertisements, these newspapers offer farmers exposure to new opportunities, market trends, and relevant policies that directly affect their practices. This study aims to explore how newspaper advertisements in Jalingo impact small-scale farming by providing farmers with valuable information that can lead to improved agricultural outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of numerous agricultural programs aimed at enhancing the productivity of small-scale farmers in Jalingo, there remains a significant gap in farmers’ awareness of these programs and modern agricultural techniques. This issue is compounded by the lack of direct communication between the government, agricultural institutions, and the farmers. The role of newspapers in bridging this gap remains under-researched, particularly in relation to how advertisements within newspapers can influence the adoption of farming innovations. The problem lies in understanding the effectiveness of newspaper advertisements in promoting small-scale farming, given that many farmers in Jalingo are not always receptive to new ideas due to limited exposure to relevant information. Additionally, there is a need to explore whether the advertisements published in local newspapers reach the right audience, are effectively understood by farmers, and whether they translate into tangible improvements in farming practices. This study seeks to address these concerns by examining how newspaper advertisements influence small-scale farmers' decisions and behavior in Jalingo Local Government.

Furthermore, the research will provide recommendations for improving the effectiveness of newspaper advertisements in rural agricultural settings, potentially aiding government agencies, agricultural organizations, and policy-makers in designing better communication strategies for reaching small-scale farmers.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of newspaper advertisements in promoting small-scale farming in Jalingo Local Government, Taraba State. It will be limited to analyzing the content of local newspapers and their impact on farming practices. Limitations include the accessibility of farmers, particularly in remote areas, and potential biases in the advertisements published by newspapers, which may not fully reflect the needs of all small-scale farmers.
